The Great Westward Migration was the process of Ruthenians from the Kievan Rus and Wallachians from the Balkans migrating into what would now be Carpathian Rus. This was facilitated through the lenient policies regarding immigration by the Kingdom of Hungary. In particular, the Vlach Law or Vlach laws set a precedent for migration into the periphery by allowing settlement and offering various benefits like exemption from taxes and military service. The new inhabitants in exchange would have the responsibility of taming the land and guarding the border regions.
