{"id":6675,"date":"2023-06-23T06:50:41","date_gmt":"2023-06-23T11:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rusynsociety.com\/?p=6675"},"modified":"2025-10-21T12:52:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:52:54","slug":"national-trauma-the-lemko-ethnocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rusynsociety.com\/rul\/2023\/06\/23\/national-trauma-the-lemko-ethnocide\/","title":{"rendered":"National Trauma: The Lemko Ethnocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The plight of the Lemkos in Poland does not just equate to &#8220;Aksja Wisla&#8221;, the operation that instituted the forced resettlement of Lemkos to western Poland. Merely labeling it as this removes the purposeful campaign to erase the idea of Lemkovyna altogether, never mind the stories of the crippling trauma and permanent cultural erasure that occurred. In fact, one could argue that the crimes committed by the Polish and Soviet governments rose to a level far greater than forced relocation. In a short span of just a few years, there is a list of heinous actions that not only has the Polish government largely denied responsibility for, but has done nothing to change to make up for their actions. But what exactly do we mean when we say there is more to the story?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Lemko Ethnocide <\/strong>was the ethnic cleansing and forced assimilation policy conducted by the Polish government against the Lemko people that began in 1945 and ended in 1947 when the last Lemkos were exiled to western Poland. After this period was the <strong>Decades of Silence <\/strong>where the Rusyn identity and language were banned until the fall of communism in 1991. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When understanding why we date the start of this ethnocide in 1945 instead of 1947, it&#8217;s important to understand that Operation Vistula (Aksja Wisla) was not the only displacement event that occurred in the region. As was common in the 20th century, a policy of <strong>Rusyn erasure <\/strong>occurred where Lemko-Rusyns were labeled as Ukrainians even with plenty of evidence to the contrary. Lemko-Rusyns would be grouped with those in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) by local authorities even though their population had little to do with this foreign force. It was instead the remnants of the Galician and Volhynian ultranationalists aligned with the OUN-B and OUN-M. Dozens of massacres involving Polish civilians would occur with entire villages being burnt down in the process. Vek\u0161ostj pereselenych naj\u0161li sja na Zapadn\u00f4j Ukrajin\u00ef, de sja prisochtovali do ukrajinskoj kultury i \u017eytja. Na po\u010datku akciji \u00abVisla\u00bb histori\u010dno zaseleny Ukrajincjami i Rusinami-Lemkami tereny u\u017ee byli u velik\u00f4j m\u00efr\u00ef bezljudny. Toto bylo u\u017ee lem zakon\u010dinja roboty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Po Akciji Visla byla provedena c\u00efljova \u010distka v\u0161ytkych vidimych sl\u00efdu Lemk\u00f4v na jich zemli. C\u00efly sela byli strebleny, a ostav\u0161y chramy silov zabrano pravoslavn\u00f4j i hrekokatolick\u00f4j cirjkvam. Veljo z tych chramu doteperj funguvut hi rimokatolicky i slu\u017eat potomkam novych polskych pereselincju. Vy\u0161mareny na zapad Lemky ani ne byli poseleny razom, m\u00efsto toho byli rozs\u00efjany na \u0161yrok\u00f4j ob\u0161yri. Z \u010dasom vek\u0161ostj Lemku zabyla rusinskyj jazyk. Ne bylo nijakych urjadovych programu vadj pomo\u010di pro napravlinja toj krivdy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podsumovuvu\u010di, samoho lem priznanja tych pod\u00efj ne mo\u017ee byti dosta. Toto by byli lem slova bez \u017eadnoj zm\u00efny jich resultata. Minimalnoje ud\u0161kodovanja, kotroje mo\u017e prijati ud der\u017eavy toto navernutja v\u0161ytkych chramu, peredanych rimokatolick\u00f4j cerjkvi a nadanja zemli potomkam vyselenych Lemk\u00f4v z mo\u017enostiv navertanja na Lemkovinu.
