A four-volume collection of folksongs from Galicia, Hungarian Rus’ and Bukovina. The publication features songs in a variety of genres recorded in a broad area that includes present-day Subcarpathia, Prešov Region and Lemko Region. The author’s work was aided by many Carpatho-Rusyn colleagues, including A. Duchnovyč, A. Pavlovyč and V. Chŷľak.
By the time his magnum opus was published in Moscow (after 40 years of preparation), the author had emigrated to the Russian Empire and intended it as a way of introducing the Rusyns of Austria-Hungary to the Russian public. To that end, the publication is accompanied by introductory articles on the region (“Carpathian Rus’” in the broad sense) and its constituent parts, its ethnographic map, and 20 images demonstrating regional folk costumes. The fourth volume is concluded with detailed indices.
